Why Lighting Matters: Designing for Daily Activities

When designing a home, lighting is far more than just a finishing touch — it's essential to creating spaces that function beautifully and feel just right.
At Leslie Jade Interior, we refer to this concept as Activity Lighting — the thoughtful selection of light sources based on how a space is used day-to-day.
Lighting dramatically shapes the way a home feels, especially when matched to the specific tasks or moods a client wants to support. Here’s how we approach it:
Living Spaces & Bedrooms: Lighting for Relaxation
In daily living and entertainment areas — including family rooms, living rooms, and bedrooms — the goal is typically to foster relaxation and comfort.
These spaces often prioritize natural light during the day, supplemented by ambient sources like floor lamps, table lamps, and ceiling fixtures.
Since these rooms are meant for lounging, entertaining, or winding down, task lighting (focused, directional lighting) is generally optional and based on personal preference.
Reading Nooks: Lighting for Focused Activities
Reading areas, however, have very specific lighting needs.
Because reading is a focused activity, strong task lighting is essential — typically in the form of well-placed floor or table lamps near seating areas.
General lighting, such as overhead ceiling fixtures and daytime natural light, provides broader illumination, but without dedicated task lighting, these spaces may feel inadequate for prolonged reading.
Across all spaces, one truth remains:
Natural light is the foundation of good design.
It enhances mood, boosts energy, and creates a more dynamic, welcoming environment.
Whenever possible, we maximize access to natural light — and complement it thoughtfully with layered artificial lighting to meet the client’s unique needs.
